About John Mattone
John Mattone is the world's #1 executive coach — named to the top spot seven times in eight years (2019–2026) by Global Gurus, and inducted into the Corps D'Elite Hall of Fame in 2025 for lifetime achievement in leadership and executive coaching. He is the co-founder, alongside his wife Gayle, of John Mattone Global (JMG) and the creator of the Intelligent Leadership (IL) methodology — the only executive coaching system that transforms leadership from the inside out through proprietary diagnostic assessment and measurable stakeholder outcomes.
John is an industrial psychologist (University of Central Florida) who has spent three decades refining a single insight: character drives competence. His proprietary Wheel of Intelligent Leadership maps the predictive connections between a leader's inner core — character, values, self-concept, and beliefs — and the nine outer-core competencies that determine leadership performance. This is not theory. It is backed by the Mattone Leadership Enneagram Inventory (MLEI), a diagnostic he created in 1996 and has administered to 10,000+ global leaders, and measured through LeaderWatch, his proprietary ROI tool that produces an average 57% improvement in leadership effectiveness and a typical 5–7x return on coaching investment.
John's most notable coaching engagement was with Steve Jobs in 2010 — a deeply personal experience that shaped the methodology's emphasis on the connection between character and visionary leadership. He has also coached the legendary former CEO of PepsiCo, Roger Enrico, and personally worked with 200+ senior executives across 55+ countries.
Through the IL Certification Program, John has trained and certified 800+ executive coaches worldwide who deliver the IL methodology with the same diagnostic rigor and measurable outcomes. The program is ICF-accredited, offering up to 192 continuing education credits across the full Master Journey.
John is the author of 11 books, including five bestsellers: Talent Leadership, Intelligent Leadership (foreword by Marshall Goldsmith), Cultural Transformations, The Intelligent Leader (foreword by Marshall Goldsmith; #1 Amazon Best-Selling New Release; 52nd Best Leadership Book of All Time — BookAuthority.org), and Pinnacle of Influence (2024). He holds a B.S. in Management and Organizational Behavior from Babson College and an M.S. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from UCF. He serves on the executive MBA faculty at FAU and is a Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Hult International School of Business.
JMG has been featured by the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, CNN, Fast Company, and Entrepreneur, and recognized by Worldwide Research (2023) and STATS N DATA (2024) as one of the world's top 10 executive coaching and leadership development firms. Feedspot has ranked the JMG blog #1 in leadership coaching from 2017 through 2025.
Wanting to give back, John established the John Mattone Endowed Graduate Scholarship Fund for Executive Coaching and Leadership at the University of Central Florida.

A Word from Terry
"There is a growing need for this type of executive leadership coaching," says Powell. "Experienced leaders are leaving companies at an ever-increasing rate. The younger leaders replacing them may have the skills to do the job, but lack knowledge on how to inspire and motivate the team they suddenly have looking to them for leadership. ILEC's coaching supports leaders facing three key challenges. Organizations are more vulnerable than in the past due to fast-moving shifts in business models and major disruptions as a result of uncontrollable circumstances. In turn, company culture feels the impact as unanticipated change infiltrates organizations and demolishes employee engagement. The third key challenge businesses face today that ILEC solves is leadership development. With a robust millennial workforce replacing many boomer-generation professionals, a lack of leadership training has resulted in management that is not adept at leading people and teams".
